Installation and Maintenance of Marine Battery Charger:

Installation: Before we start installation we will need the following tools/equipment

  • :Battery
  • Battery box or a thick rubber mat to place the battery
  • Battery terminals
  • Lugs
  • Battery cables (Red and black colored)heat shrink
  • Cable ties
  • Fuse
  • Crimping tool
  • Heat gun

Steps to install a battery:

Step 1:

Select the location of your battery. it must be cool high and dry

Step 2

Select a place for installing your battery switching. it must be dry and easy to access

Step 3

Measure the distance from +VE to the terminal of your battery the battery switches

Step 4

Measure the distance from the battery switch to the bus bar or the +VE terminal of your equipment

Step 5:

Measure the distance from the – VE terminal of the battery to the bus bar .

Step 6

Prepare your cable for the following step:

  • Strip the outer sheath of the cable to expose approximate of bare wire
  • Cut 30mm of heat shrink
  • Attach lugs to the exposed part of the cable
  • Crimp the lugs
  • Slide the heat shrink over the cable lug
  • Use the heat gun to melt the heat shrink into the place

Connect the cable to the battery Tighten the terminals  Give finishing touches to the installation process by:

  • Secure the cables tidily using cable ties
  • Protect the terminals by spraying Boe shield on them to prevent corrosion

Maintenance:

The battery voltage should be at or above a 50% state of charge for maximum battery life. Keep the battery electrolyte level to the indicated level never let the plates be exposed above the electrolyte. I use only distilled water not tap water when refilling the batteries

Safety precautions of Marine battery charger

Marine batteries can be dangerous to deal with. Follow these safety precautions steps:

  • Wear safety glasses whenever you are handling boat batteries as they tend to leak acid and ignite sparks
  • Get a battery with ab strap to keep everything dry and protected when carrying and transporting the battery
  • Allow battery hardware and connectors to cool down before disconnecting and transporting the battery
  • Use nylon nuts instead of wing nuts for tighter battery connections
  • Track the usage of marine batteries by checking for the manufacturing date stamped on the top
